At least 37 children die as Pakistan school bus is crushed like a pancake

At least 37 school children, two teachers and the deputy head have been killed in a bus crash in Pakistan.

The children, all between the ages of 12 and 14, died when the bus overturned on a motorway and plunged into a ditch while returning from a school trip. Another 47 pupils and teachers were seriously injured.

The accident happened in Kallar Kahar, around 100 miles east of the capital Islamabad, after the school party had visited a salt mine.

The driver is said to have lost control of the bus near Salt Range when the brakes failed, the Pakistan Daily Times reported.

More than 100 children from the Millat Grammar School in Faisalabad were aboard the bus.

Twenty of them died at the scene, the others died later in hospital, mainly from loss of blood, a hospital source told the Pakistan Observer.

One of the rescuers, Kamran Rasheed, told Dawn.com that the vehicle had to be cut open so the bodies of the victims and the injured could be taken out.

Pakistan has one of the world's worst records for fatal traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads, badly-maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

Kallar Kahar is a sub-division of Chakwal District in Punjab and is known as a popular tourist destination.
